Can FormEffects panels be used on the exterior as well as interior?

The short answer is yes, FormEffects panels can be installed in interior as well as exterior applications. The main differences are panel thickness and attachment method.

For panels used on an interior installation we recommend using a strong epoxy adhesive such as Laticrete Latapoxy 310 (please visit the Laticrete website at www.laticrete.com to learn more). Further installation instructions can be found on the Resources section of the website. We do not recommend thin set mortars for installation due to the high water content.

For panels being installed on an exterior, an engineer will typically recommend using a rainscreen or GIRT system whereby anchors are strategically placed on the panels to line up with the appropriate substructure. Considerations such as freeze/thaw environments, seismic activity, and other weather-related variables should be discussed with an engineer prior to deciding the appropriate attachment method.

How do I figure out how many panels to order?

We recommend creating a panel layout using architectural drawings to determine seam locations and quantities. Choosing the desired panel from the collection, decide the best fit to maximize the use of full-size panels by measuring out the panels on the drawings. We recommend using full-size panels that will be cut on site for any areas where full-size panels will not fit.

Every 8 panels typically covers ~100 square feet, we do not accept orders for under 250 square feet at this time.

How much do FormEffects panels weigh?

FormEffects panels weigh between 7 to 9 pounds per square foot.

What type of shop drawings are included with my FormEffects order?

FormEffects orders are provided with shop drawing tickets that depict a single panel type. A shop drawing layout in elevation is not included unless required and otherwise specified when ordering.

Shipping

How are FormEffects panels shipped?

FormEffects panels are specially packed in fully enclosed wooden crates to prevent damage during shipping. Depending on the size of the order, the material is shipped either LTL freight or through a dedicated freight carrier to the project site. Transit times vary by location and type of receiving facility.

Can I ship to a residential address?

Typically, yes. It will depend on the local residential access and may  require specialty sized trucks that come at an additional cost. Please contact us directly to inquire about your residential shipping request.

What do I need to unload a shipment?

Depending on the location and size of an order, liftgate deliveries may be available to place the material curbside, but that is typically a limited option. It is strongly recommended to have a forklift or other offloading equipment to safely unload the crates of FormEffects panels.

What should I do once the crates are unloaded?

Once unloaded, the panels should be promptly moved indoors and the panels removed from the crates. The panels should be stored indoors in a dry, moisture-controlled environment. The storage area shall be large enough to allow adequate space to safely handle the panels. The panels should be stored on its edge in storage racks installed to level ground. Non-marking and non-staining material should be used as protection where the concrete tile is in contact with the storage rack. It is best to leave the panels individually spaced.

Installation

How are FormEffects panels installed?

For interior applications, reference the Latapoxy 310 specification to determine recommended adhesive application process and suitable substrates. Please visit formeffects.com/installation for detailed instructions. Exterior panels are often mechanically attached utilizing face-fasteners or cladding system such as a rain-screen or girt system. These setups typically require hardware or anchors to be inserted into the back of the panels. The process may be done as part of the fabrication process or drilled in the field by the installers. An engineer may determine appropriate spacing of anchors. Please reference our “Resources” section for further information.

Does my FormEffects order come with engineering for determining proper attachment hardware and spacing?

No, we recommend that the licensed engineer of record conduct the analysis on preferred attachment method based on project location, site conditions, local building code, and applicable variables such as weather and seismic conditions. These factors will determine the precise location of any hardware that should be installed on the panels as well as the proper girt system and anchor spacing.

Can FormEffects panels be cut and drilled in the field?

Yes, they can. The Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete mix used for our FormEffects panels allows for easy field cutting and drilling during installation. There is no metal reinforcement or large stone aggregate that typically makes concrete difficult to modify. Please visit our Resources section for detailed instructions on cutting and drilling the FormEffects panels.

How small can I cut down a FormEffects field panel if I am left with a narrow space to fill?

We recommend no less than 12” minimum width. Keep in mind that you should consider the faux seam layout with respect to the adjacent panels on Alpine and Coastal finishes.

Can FormEffects panels be installed below grade?

Yes, FormEffects panels are able to be installed below grade.

Are FormEffects panels resistant to freeze thaw cycles?

FormEffects panels are resistant to extreme heat and cold weather conditions. However, attachment methods need to be considered if water will be able to get behind the panels.

What if we want to mechanically attach the panels to the wall?

FormEffects panels do also come available with cast-in metal clips at the top side of the panel that allow the panels to be mechanically fastened to the wall framing or substrate. It is still recommended that an epoxy adhesive is used in conjunction with the clips for a secure installation.

How are the keyed edges of cut in field panels detailed?

A left and right template key is provided with every order. This will be used to stencil the outlines for cutting precision keyed edges to maintain consistent seam spacing between panels. Follow the installation and cutting instructions through the process.

How many people are needed to install a panel?

FormEffects panels typically weigh between 80-100 pounds so it is recommended at least 2 individuals handle and install the panels. The panels should always be handled in a vertical orientation.

Does FormEffects provide the recommended adhesive and joint detailing materials?

Adhesive, caulking, and joint detailing materials are not included with the FormEffects panels and must be purchased by others.
